🥰 Looking down at this girl’s face and doing training “walks” makes my soul happy - enjoy some pictures from ours today! 😊

🐕 When we left the house I knew in my mind that my main focus was going to be holding distance stays (mostly without recall), in sit and in down positions as we have lacked practice of this during pandemic. I went with the flow aiming to cover a mix of things for the rest of the walk.

🦮 On our half hour walk we did the following structure (not to say this is how you SHOULD do it, or that this is what we do every time but on this particular walk this particular day this is what we did) :

• Couple minutes of sniffing/toileting etc

• Some structured leash walking with marking correct position, praising automatic checkins, using non-verbal cues for stopping and starting movement

• Couple minutes of off-leash heeling, in/around grassy area (challenge but she smashed it)

• Alternating bursts of free roaming, sniffing etc with time spent on training focus points (see below)

• Training focus points:
- Down stay close by with distraction nearby (kids on bikes)
- Sit stay close by with distraction medium distance (dogs)
- Down stay with walk away & approach
- Sit stay with walk away & out of sight & return
- Sit & wait with recall to sit
- Down & wait then stand at distance without automatic recalling (we need to work on this again)

• Off leash free roaming/sniffing/running with bursts of heeling past high intensity distractions (off leash dog - old, friendly)

🐾 On returning, we did cooperative care of letting me wipe her paws then fresh water to drink

😴 Since then it’s been decompression & settle time with her antler and then sleeping, while I rest & recover.

We’re now both exhausted and she is sleeping pretty much constantly bless her so we’ve got a quiet couple of days of recovery! 😴

*NON-VERBAL PRACTICE* Here are a couple of snippet

*NON-VERBAL PRACTICE*
Here are a couple of snippets from my previous training session where I was focusing on communicating without words. Instead I use a mix of established hand signals for specific commands, combined with finger snaps, indications by pointing and patting my thigh. I am also communicating with my body language and facial expressions.

The aim of this is to have a solid way of communicating in situations where verbal communication isn’t appropriate or possible. I frequently use a mix but sometimes it needs to be exclusively non-verbal.

The focus here is on things that would come up in a situation when we’re out and about in that kind of environment: positional navigating, me dropping the leash, her getting her leash, untangling from her leash, sit/down stays, grounding and a full on response to hyperventilation with immediate response to the non-verbal “off” cue (so it is at no point out of control).

It isn’t perfect but there is a general mutual understanding and that’s what matters, while we work on fine tuning some of the positions.

All on slip lead without use of corrections, just gentle leash pressure occasionally. The focus is on the communication between us, with the leash being a physical connection as it would be there in most of these situations.

Making use of Sparrow being in total high drive mode while my back is still bad and getting things from the floor is even more problematic than usual!

We have done “sock” before a couple of times (the use of the word is not a routine one though). We have never done “shoe” before but I could tell that in this moment if I gestured towards it she would puzzle it out and then would have a great positive experience of retrieving new items.

(NOTE: she is panting like this because we just got back from a high intensity walk. After this video I then encouraged her to have water and settle for a while to decompress and relax.)

🎥 Video Description: Sparrow, a dark golden retriever, is filmed retrieving socks, one by one, followed by a pair of shoes one by one. She gets praised every time she brings it to her handler’s hand, and then gets a medium value treat and big praise at the end! Commands used are “get my sock” and “get my shoe”, marker is “yes” (for picking up) and praise is “good girl” (for full retrieval to hand).

Haven’t posted in a while. Life has been up and down but we’re getting there.
Po has been showing lots of mental improvement. He’s learning a lot of self control around other dogs and people lately.
In the photos and videos there are two other dogs on the field both running and playing. One is roughly 150m away, the other 200m. He was making the conscious decision to stay with me as I requested in the heel sit position 😁
Managed to walk the majority of the way back in the heel position off lead too!
He’s been working too and his mental transition to “work mode” is very evident as of late 😁.
Very proud of Po lately ❤️.
The Lord Eli has been his usually self, always looking for food, always wanting to play, always wanting a cuddle, but he is working less and less as Po steps up to the challenge 😁.

I completely forgot I ordered this!
Checking out some books online the other day and managed to spot this beaut. A first edition 🥰🥰🥰.
This book is the first one I read by Kristin Cashore.
It was my inspiration for a photo project during college, and Po gets his name from the first book in the series (Graceling, Fire, Bitterblue). Even my gecko is named after the first book 😂.
This book will never be read the spine is PERFECT on it and it shall stay that way 👌.
